Renovation and Circulation of Architectual Resouces

・Research and development on conversions

There is a social demand to renovate existing buildings in Japan. Conversion is one of means to renovate redundant buildings|changing the use of buildings to improve the value of usage. Conversions are expected not only to rebuild vacant buildings but also to revitalize urban areas that are losing their identity.
In a large research project on conversions, we have designed models of changing offices into flats in Japan. The models simulate project schemes for conversions and develop building subsystems to improve existing buildings, such as the introduction of a double skin facade system for renovation. Furthermore, we have developed a method to evaluate potential buildings for conversion, based on field surveys of vacant offices in Tokyo.
